surfactin uses
Surfactin is a cyclic lipopeptide, commonly used as an antibiotic for its capacity as a surfactant. It is an amphiphile capable of withstanding hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments. The Gram-positive bacterial species Bacillus subtilis produces surfactin for its antibiotic effects against competitors.

Surfactant is an agent that decreases the surface tension between two media. The surface tension between gaseous-aqueous interphase in the lungs is decreased by the presence of a thin layer of fluid known as pulmonary surfactant. The pulmonary surfactant is produced by the alveolar type-II (AT-II) cells of the lungs.

Biosurfactants are active compounds that are produced at the microbial cell surface or excreted, and reduce surface and interfacial tension. Microbial surfactants offer several advantages over synthetic ones, such as low toxicity and high biodegradability, and remain active at extreme pH and salinity.

Surfactin has a ring-shaped peptide chain containing seven amino acids, and a β-hydroxy fatty acid chain of 13–16 carbon atoms as shown in Fig. Because of some differences in the length of the fatty acid chain and the types of amino acids, surfactin has many congeners or isoforms.

The isolated surfactin exhibits good antimicrobial activity (1600 AU/ml) against drug-resistant food-born B. cereus and human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. Hence, identified strain B. velezensis SK and its potent antibacterial surfactin lipopeptide could be used in various food and biomedical applications.
