Description:
Pramlintide acetate is an amlyinomimetic, a functional analog of the naturally occurring pancreatic hormone amylin. Amylin is active in many gastrointestinal and glucose dynamic systems, and by mimicking its activity, pramlintide improves blood glucose by regulating gastric emptying rate, preventing postprandial glucagon levels rise and by increasing satiety control, thereby reducing caloric intake and increasing weight loss. There appear to be at least three distinct receptor complexes that bind amylin with high affinity. All three complexes contain the core calcitonin receptor, and one of three receptor activity-modifying proteins, RAMP1, RAMP2, or RAMP3.
