Like lidocaine and mepivacaine, bupivacaine is used in infiltration, spinal, and epidural anesthesia to block nerve conduction. Its most unique property is its long-lasting effect. It is used for urology and lower thoracic procedures that last 3 to 5 hours and abdominal procedures that last 45 to 60 minutes. It is used to block the trigeminal, sacral, and brachial plexuses, reduction and dislocation, epidural anesthesia, and caesarean sections.
